Longfellow Creek Legacy Trail

A Community Planning Process for a Neighborhood Trail

Seattle, Washington, 2001-2002

During my tenure as the Associate Director of Pomegranate Center, (a community development non-profit organization,) I acted as the Project Manager for the Longfellow Creek Legacy Trail planning process. The process wa s born from the neighborhoods desire for a trail that was spelled out in their neighborhood plan.

With funding from the City of Seattle, and with management from the Delridge Neighborhoods Development Association, Pomegranate Center and our associates CommEn Space (a community gis analysis non-profit) and Chimera Landscape architects, we embarked on a year-long process to help the community envisionthe best route for three miles of trail through an urban neighborhood.

We used a number of techniques to garner input including: teaching gis to local youth to help us map the trail, planned and spontaneous interviews with local residents about trail issues/desires, gathering historical data about the area, creating maps with trail alternatives and requesting passive input from passers by at local community cetners and businesses, and of course small and large community meetings.

The process was contentious and complex, but ultimately, after many meetings and work with numerous City departments including SeaTrans, Parks and Recreation, and Public Utilities, the community signed off on a plan for three-miles of urban trail that is in its first phase of implementation currently.

The project was funded through the City of Seattle, Department of Neighborhoods Matching Grant program. The work was made possible by hundreds of volunteer hours from teh community, strong support from dnda and the entire pomegranate center team.
