The Reflections Program is a National PTA and Washington State PTA
cultural arts program. It recognizes students'
creative talents, providing an opportunity for them to express
themselves through original works of art in a variety of categories.
Each year, Reflections challenges students to create art
that supports a specific theme. Themes are selected from
thousands of ideas submitted by students to National PTA's
Reflections Theme Search. The 2008-2009 Reflections theme was
"WOW".
This year over seventeen thousand students participated and submitted artwork to
local PTA/PTSA units statewide. Through the various levels of judging,
Washington State PTA received 1,327 entries. We are recognizing 114 entries with
Outstanding Interpretation and Award of Excellence awards.
One entry in each arts category, in each age division, is chosen to receive the
Outstanding Interpretation Award. The Outstanding Interpretation Award winners
in all six categories are then sent on to the National PTA Reflections program for
additional judging and consideration for National PTA Reflections awards.
Up to five additional entries per age category and arts division are also
chosen to receive the Award of Excellence. All of the award recipients received
special medallions, ribbons and certificates in recognition of their creativity
and talent at the Washington State PTA Reflections Award Ceremony, held at the
annual Washington State PTA Convention on May 3, 2009, at the
DoubleTree Hotel in SeaTac.
Young artists get involved in Reflections through their
local PTA or PTSA. A student may submit an entry in any of
six arts areas. Only original
works of art are accepted. The art areas are as follows:
- Literature — works of fiction, nonfiction, poetry,
prose, drama, short stories and lyrics.
- Music Composition — original musical composition, with
or without words.
- Photography — prints up to 11 x 14 inches in color or
black and white, including various techniques such as photogram,
retouching, montage, sandwich and multiple exposure.
- Visual Arts — drawing; painting in tempera, oil,
acrylic, watercolor & fabric paints; computer
generated art; two-dimensional collage; printmaking;
needlework; & leather tooling.
- Film — An original film, fiction or non-fiction, where the
student is the director, screenwriter, camera operator, and editor. Possible
forms include drama, comedy, action, documentary, animation, and slide
show. Each entry is submitted on DVD.
- Choreography — An original choreographed dance, performed by
one to three dancers, with or without costumes, submitted on DVD.
Participation in Reflections is organized into Divisions. Entries
are divided by student grade levels. This allows
recognition and judging of artworks by appropriate developmental age
and skill levels. The four Divisions are:
- Primary — Preschool - Grade 2
- Intermediate — Grades 3 - 5
- Middle/Junior — Grades 6 - 8
- Senior — Grades 9 - 12
Entries are judged on creativity, originality, and interpretation
of the theme. The Reflections Program is structured for PTAs
to recognize
students at the local, council, state, and
national levels. Entries are first judged at the local level
and selected works are chosen to represent the PTA at each
subsequent level.
All PTAs/PTSAs in good standing may sponsor the Reflections
Program. Students may only submit entries through a PTA/PTSA.
Parent groups not affiliated with the National PTA are not
eligible to sponsor this program. Information is distributed to PTA/PTSAs
in the fall.
The Reflections theme for 2009-2010 is "Beauty Is...".
It's not too early to start thinking about your
entry. Rules and entry forms will be available Fall 2009.
