Constructing a Journey: Writing the Travel Narrative

For a travel narrative to be more than a collection of anecdotes and descriptions of passing scenery, it's crucial to weave together our impressions and research with a larger sense of what the trip might mean in our own lives. In this class we'll familiarize ourselves with the work of a number of contemporary writers such Pico Iyer and Gretel Ehrlich, who look at the inner and outer meanings of journeys. In class exercises we'll generate new writing and develop skills to blend observation with reflection.
