According to most of the media pundits, the neocons, their foundational belief is that the USA should have the 10 commandments, as in the bible, be everywhere: the courthouse, the public schools, the public domain and practically everywhere. In the courthouse there is no swearing on the bible. That is unconstitutional and you don't have to swear on the bible. I have been there many times during my ordeal with the federalies. In court, all one does is raise his right hand (or which ever one is available) and swear to tell the truth, which puts you under oath and if you get caught in an important lie, that could be a crime. These neocons don't ever talk about in any detail the 10 ammendments of the USA constitution Bill of Rights. The Bill of Rights, to me, is the greatest writing in the history of the world, a work of sublime beauty.

10 commandment afficianados

You got idiots such as Ted "the nuge" Nugent (millionair crappy guitar player with an assualt rifle up his ass),

Bill O'reilly the presumably greatest millionair of them all TV talk show host,

Ann Coulter the crazy right wing millionair bitch and seller of millions of her books,

Rush Limbaugh the millionair bouncing baby big fat psuedo patriot,

Newt Getrich, millionair demogogue ex house of representatives

Glen Beck, millionair mukraking alarmist over the USA becoming communist with president Obama akin to Adolf Hitler.

Don Imus, millionair self denying republican neocon Bush lover - him and his big cowboy hat.

Geraldo Rivera the great millionair suck up who loves and reports from the war in Afganistan.

and myriads of these people who are always spewing this self righteous madness called "conservative". Either they are intellectually dishonest or just plain stupid. Even the Surpreme court is mostly Roman Catholic, a strange rather superstitious religion where they bow down before a black robed priest and his crucified Christ and take a wafer of bread by mouth (the body of Christ) and grape juice (supposedly wine - the blood of Christ), which is the sacrement of the Roman Catholic church. It is like the entire world is going mad with superstitions.

There are more people that either know the facts of this or just don't give a fucking damn - they vote for such destroyers and mass murderers as George Bush routinely. They love the drug war, the wars in the middle east (Afganistan, Irak and Iran) and the rule of some kind of sickening nauseating laws. They have a special hatred of president Obama and blame him for the 12 trillion dollar national dept that the greatest moron of them all, George Bush transformed Bill Clintons surplus national debt from. Their 10 commandments are far more than a little list of 10 "thou shalt nots". When one has a law, what makes it a "LAW" is the punishment inflicted on the law breakers, or else the "LAW" would be a suggestion, ignored. These neocons are dark ages, out of the mideviel, insidious. Here is one of my "pamphlets" in the tradition of James Madison and such founding fathers who prefered the 10 ammendments, the Bill of Rights. You have to wonder how Madison, the father of the constitution came up with the genius Bill of Rights.

THE TEN COMMANDMENTS (short forms)

1. I am the LORD your God. You shall have no other gods before me.

2. You shall not worship idols, for I am the LORD your God.

3. You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain.

4. Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy.

5. Honor your Father and Mother

6. You shall not murder

7. You shall not commit adultery

8. You shall not steal

9. You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor

10. You shall not covet your neighbor's possessions.

Actually, the 10 commandments as given above is not how the Bible gives them. They are a shortened form. According to the Bible, there is more to them. The 10 commandments appear in the Bible twice, once in EXODUS and once in DEUTERONOMY. In the actual biblical version, which are the longer versions, the 10 commandments were instructed to the Israelites through Moses about 3500 years ago. In that form, the ancient applications are seen, but within the literal versions, the short versions can be easily extracted and made to appear good for the world of today. But actually, they aren't good for today. Three of the laws are good and the remainder are worthless in the public domain of the secular humanist constitutional law of the USA.

The first commandment (I am the LORD) is good in church or synagog, but it is forbidden in the law of the United States as instructed by the first amendment of the US constitution.

The second commandment (no idol worship) is good in church or synagog, and again, the first amendment of the US constitution does not allow it into the law of the people. The laws of the United States of America are strictly secular. Religion has no place or role in the law of the USA, but idol worship is not prohibited by the law of the USA in the private domain.

The third commandment (not taking the LORD'S name in vain) is not prohibited by the US constitution.

The fourth commandment (keeping the sabbath) is meaningless because the sabbath day does not exist. Is it saturday or is it sunday? Maybe it is everyday? Who decides? Which calendar is to be used? It is unconstitutional.

The fifth commandment (honoring parents) is incomplete. Only if the parents are worthy of honor is where this commandment is good. Parents have to earn honor. Bad parenting is unworthy to be honored, and there is a lot of that going on in this world. In many instances, the parents deserve only dishonor. The fifth commandment as public law has no place in the modern world of a free country like the USA.

The sixth commandment (don't murder) is good. It is a constitutional protection for the people.

The seventh commandment (don't commit adultery), is wise, but it is unconstitutional to apply a criminal penalty to it. So it has no place in the constitutional law of the USA as far as criminality. It is a part of the civil law protecting marriage agreements.

The eighth commandment (don't steal) is good. It is constitutional to make thievery against the law of the people.

The ninth commandment (don't lie) is good where it belongs. Lying is not against the constitution because it is a personal choice, but it is against the public law when the freedom of others is involved or in criminal cases.

The tenth commandment (coveting) has no place in the law of the USA. But the reverse of the commandment is waranted because coveting is actually good in the commercial world. Coveting other peoples property and possessions is a good thing in that it makes commerce work.

So to add it up, two of the commandments of the LORD (6th and 8th) are good for society and a third (10th) is good for the economy but the other seven have no place in the modern constitutional secular rule of law.

Here are the 10 commandments as read literally from the Bible:

EXODUS

20:2 I am Yahweh your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage.

20:3 You shall have no other gods before me.

20:4 You shall not make for yourselves an idol, nor any image of anything that is in the heavens above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth:

20:5 you shall not bow yourself down to them, nor serve them, for I, Yahweh your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children, on the third and on the fourth generation of those who hate me,

20:6 and showing loving kindness to thousands of those who love me and keep my commandments.

20:7 You shall not take the name of Yahweh your God in vain, for Yahweh will not hold him guiltless who takes his name in vain.

20:8 Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy.

20:9 You shall labor six days, and do all your work,

20:10 but the seventh day is a Sabbath to Yahweh your God. You shall not do any work in it, you, nor your son, nor your daughter, your man-servant, nor your maid-servant, nor your cattle, nor your stranger who is within your gates;

20:11 for in six days Yahweh made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested the seventh day; therefore Yahweh blessed the Sabbath day, and made it holy.

20:12 Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land which Yahweh your God gives you.

20:13 You shall not murder.

20:14 You shall not commit adultery.

20:15 You shall not steal.

20:16 You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor.

20:17 You shall not covet your neighbor's house. You shall not covet your neighbor's wife, nor his man-servant, nor his maid-servant, nor his ox, nor his donkey, nor anything that is your neighbor's.

DEUTERONOMY

5:6 I am Yahweh your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage.

5:7 You shall have no other gods before me.

5:8 You shall not make an engraved image for yourself, nor any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth:

5:9 you shall not bow down yourself to them, nor serve them; for I, Yahweh, your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children, and on the third and on the fourth generation of those who hate me;

5:10 and showing loving kindness to thousands of those who love me and keep my commandments.

5:11 You shall not take the name of Yahweh your God in vain: for Yahweh will not hold him guiltless who takes his name in vain.

5:12 Observe the Sabbath day, to keep it holy, as Yahweh your God commanded you.

5:13 Six days shall you labor, and do all your work;

5:14 but the seventh day is a Sabbath to Yahweh your God: in it you shall not do any work, you, nor your son, nor your daughter, nor your man-servant, nor your maid-servant, nor your ox, nor your donkey, nor any of your cattle, nor your stranger who is within your gates; that your man-servant and your maid-servant may rest as well as you.

5:15 You shall remember that you were a servant in the land of Egypt, and Yahweh your God brought you out of there by a mighty hand and by an outstretched arm: therefore Yahweh your God commanded you to keep the Sabbath day.

5:16 Honor your father and your mother, as Yahweh your God commanded you; that your days may be long, and that it may go well with you, in the land which Yahweh your God gives you.

5:17 You shall not murder.

5:18 Neither shall you commit adultery.

5:19 Neither shall you steal.

5:20 Neither shall you give false testimony against your neighbor.

5:21 Neither shall you covet your neighbor's wife; neither shall you desire your neighbor's house, his field, or his man-servant, or his maid-servant, his ox, or his donkey, or anything that is your neighbor's.

When one reads the Old Testament for the first time, it seems to be a book of high knowledge and ideals exemplified by beautiful and fanciful stories, but under closer examination, the opposite is true. Hiding beneath the words lies an insidious philosophy and monstrous theology. The following analysis takes the scriptures to mean what they say at their face value. The Bible was not handed to mankind out of heaven as the fundamentalists would have the world believe. The Bible is only mans opinion about what he thinks to be the words of God.

One of the best known of the ten commandments is thou shall not kill (murder) - Deuteronomy 5:17. This is one the most easily seen contradictions of the Bible. Of course, it is a great law that works in a modern law abiding society, but in the Bible, the one who created the law, the LORD GOD, doesn't follow his own law.

The God of the Bible spoke to Abraham and told him that he would be "given" the land of Canaan for an inheritance.

Genesis 15:18 In that day Yahweh made a covenant with Abraham, saying, "To your seed have I given this land, from the river of Egypt to the great river Euphrates":

The word "given" is not the correct word when the story of the conquest is considered. On the face value of the scriptures, the conquest depicts the inheritors (invading Israelites) as at least equal in barbarity to such invaders as the Mongols of Asia, the Vikings or any such barbaric peoples of base paganism. According to the biblical account, it is seen that the invading Israelites are undeniably bloodthirsty and are instructed to do these deeds by the very God they worship (Jahweh). When the fundamentalists are confronted by this biblical fact, they will say that God instructed his people to destroy the Canaanites because they were base pagans. This is the kind of fascist racist attitude that the Nazis had.

The Israelites killed and murdered under the direct orders of their God, and not only enemy warriors, but woman, children and even animals. Jesus says in Mark 10:14 - Suffer the little children to come unto me, and forbid them not; for such is the kingdom of God.

It will be demonstrated that the God of Jesus is not the God of the conquering Israelites and to make it even worse, it will be shown later that according to contradictory New Testament theology, Jesus is the Lord God incarnated.

The problem begins when the God of the Old Testament says in Deuteronomy 1:39 - Moreover, your little ones who you said would become a prey, and your sons, who this day have no knowledge of good or evil, shall enter there, and I will give it to them, and they shall possess it.

In that passage, God declares the innocence of little ones, but in the following passages it can be seen that God contradicts his own great words.

Deuteronomy 2:32-34 Then Sihon with all his people came out to meet us in battle at Jahaz. And the Lord our God delivered him over to us; and we defeated him with his sons and all his people. So we captured all his cities at that time, and utterly destroyed the men, women and children of every city. We left no survivor.

Deuteronomy 3:2 But the Lord said to me, "do no fear him, for I have delivered him and all his people and his land into your hand; and you shall do to him just as you did to Sihon king of the Amorites, who live at Heshbon."

Deuteronomy 3:6 And we utterly destroyed them, as we did to Sihon king of Heshbon, utterly destroying the men, women, and children of every city.

So there it is in black and white, the God of the ancient Israelites commanded the slaughter of children and women. First, God says not to kill (murder), then he says that children do not know good and evil and then he commands the invading horde to kill all the innocents. If this is not bad enough, the biblical God himself without the hand of man destroys innocents.

Numbers 16: 27-33 So they got back from around the dwellings of Korah, Dathan and Abiram; and Dathan and Abiram came out and stood at the doorway of their tents along with their wives and their sons and their little ones. And Moses said, "by this you shall know that the Lord has sent me to do all these deeds. For this is not my doing. If these men die the death of all men, or if they suffer the fate of all men, then the Lord has not sent me, but if the Lord brings about an entirely new thing and the ground opens its mouth and swallows them up with all that is theirs, and they descend alive into sheol, then you will understand that these men have spurned the Lord." Then it came about as He finished speaking all these words, that the ground that was under them split open; and the earth opened its mouth and swallowed them up, and their households, and all the men who belonged to Korah, with their possessions. So they all that belonged to them went down alive to sheol; and the earth closed over them, and they perished from the midst of the assembly.

It seems that the great Lord God would spare the innocent babies, but no, they went down in the cave-in along with their fathers. In the later writings of Ezekial, the Lord reveals that the individual is sacrosanct and should be judged on his own merit and not by the sins of another, such as a parent. Inconsistency doesn't seem to be a trait of a perfect God, but the biblical accounts are ripe with inconsistency regarding the Lord God himself.

Ezekial 18:20 The soul that sinneth it shall die. The son shall not bear the iniquity of the father; neither shall the father bear the iniquity of the son: the righteousness of the righteous shall be upon him, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon him.

it is a long way from the book of Numbers to Ezekial (500 years), but it looks like the Lord changes his mind a lot. In the book of the Psalms, child killing is praised.

Psalms 137:8-9 Daughter of Babylon, who art to be destroyed; happy shall he be, that rewardeth thee as thou hast served us. Happy shall he be, that taketh and dasheth thy little ones against the stones.

In the New Testament, an unclean person is doomed.

Ephesians 5:5 For this ye know, that no whoremonger, nor unclean person, nor covetous man, who is an idolater, hath any inheritance in the kingdom of christ and God.

Compare this to:

1st Corinthians 7:14 For the unbelieving husband is sanctified by the wife, and the unbelieving wife is sanctified by the husband: else were your children unclean: but now they are holy.

In these verses, a child's "cleanness" is determined by the adults "cleanness." This is a clear contradiction of Ezekial 18:20 where the sons are judged on their own merit and not the fathers. "The soul that sinneth, it shall die. The son shall not bear the iniquity of the father, neither shall the father bear the iniquity of the son: the righteousness of the righteous shall be upon him, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon him." That is indeed good advice. It asserts the value of the individual. Also in Mark 10:14, it has been seen that Jesus considers children to be already in the kingdom of God because of their innocence. Suffer the little children to come unto me, and forbid them not: for of such is the kingdom of God.

The Biblical fundamentalist mind set is due to one or both of two ideas. The first is that the fundamentalist is ignorant of what the Bible says. This is usually the case. The second is a mind set far more dangerous than ignorance, and that is intellectual dishonesty. That is where the fundamentalist knows that what he is saying and believing is untrue but does it anyway for whatever distorted reason he or she has. This is extreme spiritual egotism and is very difficult to reason with. To probe into the mysteries of a wrong human psyche is to fall into a bottomless pit with no way out.

The mystery of right and wrong and good and evil is just as mysterious today as it was when it was contemplated thousands of years ago. There are countless people walking this earth that do not believe that there is a right or wrong. And then who is to say what is right or wrong? It always seems to be a matter of opinion and cultural background. Who is right? Unfortunately that cannot be answered. Innumerable books have been written about this ancient problem, and it still is a matter beyond reason. Right and wrong is something that can only be internally realized and not learned from wrote. This comes through the life experience, aging if you will. Will fundamentalism be a threat to freedom of thought? So far, it has been of negligible impact on the cultures of the free world. But what lies in the future?

The Nazi regime took over Germany in the 1930's because the ones that could fight Nazism's insane and evil doctrines were unwilling to voice their opposition, and most likely they were wise in keeping silent. They took it for granted that the unpopular teaching of Adolph Hitler would burn itself out, but they were mistaken. Is fundamentalism like Nazism? On the surface no, but with fundamentalism being embraced by white supremacists and segregationists, the warning should be heeded.

CHRISTIAN RECONSTRUCTIONISM AND BIBLICAL LAW

It is not uncommon for a fundamentalist Christian preacher to hold up the BIble and furiously declare, "This is the constitution of America." The only way that idea could be instituted is for the constitution of the United States to be thrown out and a new one written. And that is precisely what the fundamentalists want. Christian reconstructionism is a small faction of fundamentalists that would have the laws of the Bible (including the Old Testament) to be the law of the land and carried out to the letter. On examining this idea, it becomes apparent that these reconstructionist fundamentalists want to return to the dark ages. They deny this, but since they are mostly intellectually dishonest, they must be confronted with what they are teaching, or else they will skirt around these dangerous contentions.

While a few of the Ten Commandments can be seen as constitutional (secular), one must realize that for a law to be a law, there has to be some sort of penalty to pay for breaking the law, otherwise, the Ten Commandments should be the "Ten Suggestions." It is the punishments proscribed for these various "crimes" that are medieval. The following laws of the Bible are just a few of the laws that the fundamentalists would institute if they only could. These scriptures outline what God would have his enforcers actually do to those that break his commandments.

Leviticus 20:10-14 And the man that committeth adultery with another mans wife, even he that committeth adultery with his neighbor's wife, the adulterer and the adulteress shall surely be put to death. And the man that lieth with his father's wife hath uncovered his father's nakedness: both of them shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be upon them. If a man also lie with mankind, as he lieth with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination: they shall surely be put to death and their blood shall be upon them. And if a man take a wife and her mother, it is wickedness: They shall be burnt with fire, both he and her; that there be no wickedness among you.

There it is - burning at the stake. If these laws were instituted as the law of the land today, a lot of fun loving people would have to be executed. Here is another burning at the stake "crime":

Leviticus 21:9 And the daughter of any priest, if she profane herself by playing the whore, she profaneth her father; she shall be burnt with fire.

Death is declared the punishment for breaking the sabbath

Numbers 15:32-36

15:32 While the children of Israel were in the wilderness, they found a man gathering sticks on the Sabbath day.

15:33 Those who found him gathering sticks brought him to Moses and Aaron, and to all the congregation.

15:34 They put him in custody, because it had not been declared what should be done to him.

15:35 Yahweh said to Moses, "The man shall surely be put to death: all the congregation shall stone him with stones outside of the camp."

15:36 All the congregation brought him outside of the camp, and stoned him to death with stones; as Yahweh commanded Moses.

As an interesting question, when exactly is the sabbath, since it is so important to be observed properly? According to the "scholars," the sabbath is actually on saturday. Again, it seems that all of America shall be executed.

Witchcraft is declared a capital crime.

Exodus 22:18 You shall not allow a sorceress to live.

Leviticus 20:27 A man or a woman that is a medium, or is a wizard, shall surely be put to death: they shall stone them with stones; their blood shall be upon them.

According to the fundamentalists, all the followers of religions other than fundamentalist "Christian" sects are to be judged and sentenced according to the law of God. And these would include "dangerous blasphemies" such as playing with tarot cards, reading astrology magazines, wearing astrological pendants, playing with a Ouija board, reading the wrong books and whatever else they think is "occult," including the "new age" movement.

Idolatry is another capital offense.

Leviticus 20:2 Moreover, you shall tell the children of Israel, anyone of the children of Israel, or of the strangers who live as foreigners in Israel, who gives any of his seed to Molech; he shall surely be put to death. The people of the land shall stone him with stones.

Idolatry is worshipping false gods. What is a false god? In the fundamentalist mindset, that could be just about anything and everything outside of "Christian" worship.

Reviling a parent is a capital offense - Exodus 21:17 Anyone who curses his father or his mother shall surely be put to death. Smart mouthed impudent youngsters beware!

Blasphemy is a capital offense - Leviticus 24:16 He who blasphemes the name of the Lord, he shall surely be put to death; Isn't there an awful lot of "blasphemy" on TV or in the movies?

Incest is a capital offense - Leviticus 20:11 The man who lies with his father's wife has uncovered his father's nakedness: both of them shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be upon them. Incest is a revolting practice, but isn't a death penalty a bit extreme?

And then there is homosexuality. In the Old Testament, it is a death penalty.

Leviticus 18:22 You shall not lie with a man, as with a woman. That is detestable.

Leviticus 20:13 If a man lies with a male, as with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination: they shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be upon them.

Cross dressing is a crime - Deuteronomy 22:5 A woman shall not wear men's clothing, neither shall a man put on women's clothing; for whoever does these things is an abomination to Yahweh your God.

Tattoos are a Biblical crime - Leviticus 19:28 You shall not make any cuttings in your flesh for the dead, nor tattoo any marks on you. I am Yahweh.

Even children who don’t have married parents are criminals -

Deuteronomy 23:2 A bastard shall not enter into the assembly of Yahweh; even to the tenth generation shall none of his enter into the assembly of Yahweh. This law is quite astonishing in comparison with the eloquent law of Ezekial 18:20 espousing the sanctity of the individual (see above). It is impossible that the same God issued those two laws. In a court of law where the Bible is the source of the statutes, chaos would reign.

The literal enforcement of these laws would not go over too well in modern America. When the fundamentalist reconstructionist is confronted by these scriptures of final judgment, they skirt around them by babbling about forgiveness and the New Testament. Possibly the next regime won't separate the New and Old Testaments like that. Only a god created by man in the image of himself could institute such horrors as punishment by death for insignificant infractions such as working on the "sabbath" or playing with tarot cards, but that is the way the biblical law treats them and that is what the Bible says. Biblical law is not for today, it is for a time long gone.

In 1791, the United States congress created a masterpiece, the Bill of Rights. They amended the US constitution with 10 statutes. They weren't the work of some mythological God like Yahweh, but the work of inspired and educated humans. Instead of the 10 commandments of the Lord, they gave the people the first 10 amendments to the US constitution. It has been the "Bill of Rights" that has created the freedoms that only the United States of America has seen and without them, the USA would be doomed to the mediocrity of Democracy in which the people, in their ignorance, would certainly vote for repressionist laws like the 10 commandments of Yahweh.

BILL OF RIGHTS

An amazing thing is apparent here, the first amendment and the first commandment are at direct odds with one another. It seems that the early USA congress purposefully performed this one against one. It was if they targeted the first commandment with a bulls eye shot. The first commandment of Yahweh declares - I am the LORD your God. You shall have no other gods before me. The first amendment if the constitution of the USA declares - Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion. The first commandment declares that a God named the LORD shall be the GOD of all. The first amendment declares that NO God of any kind or religion shall rule in the domain of the people. The first amendment makes the first commandment a guaranteed right of the people in their private domains, but the first amendment also declares that the rule of the LORD shall not intrude into the constitutional secular law of the people.

The name of the LORD does appear in the constitution of the USA. It appears in a date at the bottom - in the year of our Lord, 1791. At first glance, it makes one wonder, but then with a little thought, it is apparent that the word "LORD" was used with a very distinct purpose, and that is to show that the constitutions writers and signers knew the LORD but only deemed the name of God worthy to be used in the constitution of the USA in a traditional manner, to designate the year. They could have just used "1791" without the "in the year of our Lord." But by using "in the year of our Lord," they showed themselves to be aware of the issue and thereby showing that they thought that the "LORD" has no place in the secular law of the constitution of the USA and secondarily, the name of God and the religion of the "LORD" is protected from the secular law. The peoples right to religion is protected, while the secular law is protected from the peoples religion. That was one of the greatest strokes of genius in the history of philosophy, government and religion. The first amendment of the USA constitution is one of the greatest of all concepts that has come from the mind of humans. And the proof is the freedom that the people of the USA has enjoyed for two centuries from the tyranny of religion. The tyranny of religion is one of the worst scourges humanity has suffered from for thousands of years of history. There should be one great commandment regarding religion - "Keep thy religion to thyself."

THE CHURCH AND STATE WALL OF SEPARATION

The "wall of separation" between Church and State is a term widely used to describe a certain phrase in the US constitution's first amendment.

Amendment I

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.

When it says "no law," that is precisely what the common phrase "wall of separation" means. The first thing to do is to define "state." This means the government. The purpose of the government is to govern and that is achieved through one thing and one thing only, THE LAW. Without law, there is no government. When one visits a lawyers office, there is a huge library of law books always present. Those law books are the statutes and laws of the government. The laws and statutes are the government, nothing more and nothing less.

The functioning government has the legislature which is the Senate and the House of Representatives. Washington DC is where they work to create Federal law, plus every state has its' own legislative body where they create state laws. That is the primary purpose of the government and it is to create law for the law abiding country. It is also referred to as the "Rule of Law."

Neocons and fundamentalists that want to make public school children pray to Jesus or some "God" and to put the Ten Commandments on the walls of the courtrooms always like to begin their arguments with the fact that the words "separation of church and state" are not constitutional, or that it isn't in the constitution. That is a shallow argument. The term "separation of church and state" is just a short form for what the First Amendment says. One just has to go to the US constitution and there it is, embodied in the First Amendment.

To see it in action, go to a Federal Courthouse and observe the proceedings in a case. When the defendant or the witnesses for the prosecution or the defense come forward to take the stand, they are required to raise their hand and swear an oath to tell the truth and if lies are put forth, that is a crime. But notice several things. There is no Bible to swear upon. The oath does not include the phrase "so help me God." Observe the walls of the courtroom and see that there are no religious sentiments or grandiose art works representing the Ten Commandments from the Bible or pretty paintings of Jesus with white skin, long hippy hair, mild beard and blue eyes. There is nothing on the walls except paint or wall paper. The court room is very spare. This is the "separation of church and state" in action, or literally, the First Amendment of the US constitution.

Since the government is instructed by the First Amendment to "make no law respecting an establishment of religion," that means that the government can't in any way make requirements for God in the public arena that is controlled by government. Since the government is basically a law giver, and the constitution says to "make no law...", that is an iron clad barrier between "church and state." But of course there are many neocons and fundamentalist right wing fanatics that think putting religious icons or biblical laws in the tax paid for public arena is not against the First Amendment. And, there are likewise many more "liberals" who think they are wrong and want their religiosity out of their public institutions. The "liberals" in this modern age have won a decisive victory in the courts of law and there is no religion in the public domain of the paid for by taxes government. The neocons and fundamentalists think that the world is going to "hell" because of the "liberals" and their "evil" work, but it is the opposite. Because of the "liberals" and their "evil" work, there are no witch trials, there are no civil wars between the "godly and the ungodly," no holy inquisition and there are equal rights under the law for everyone, including women.
