Under Construction: the post-iPad Cookbook

The last time I updated this page was early in 2008, when I was pregnant with my daughter and craving beans. I was also reducing sodium and retiring recipes. I had bought the Nutrimill a few months before, and was starting to convert a lot of recipes to whole grains.

My daughter is now five. Virtually everyone who knows me well is no longer surprised by the airplane-engine-sound of the mill when I run it. And after a few years or really not wanting to eat beans, I am interested again. (No, I am not pregnant. I think this is just sort of a Thing.) I'm still removing salt and other sodium from recipes, altho at this point, more as a representation of my current cooking practice than in an effort to establish a habit. The habit has been a habit for a while.

As part of a huge round of organization, I have a flickr account and am taking pictures for the cookbook. The current updates to recipes are to remove salt that I no longer use anyway, add an icon (the knife, fork and spoon visible on the browser tab), and add pictures if I have any. I'm also ripping out measurements and going back to an ancient style of recipe which is more about ingredients and a brief description of technique, and less about providing measurements, because I don't measure for anything other than baked goodies anyway.

Icon aside, I also use my iPad to access my recipes while cooking -- I no longer print out recipes. This may start to influence the structure. I have a vimeo account, but have not yet started taking video for the cookbook; if I do, I'll likely start with the omelette.

January update: I'm experimenting with including pictures from the original cookbooks, to see if a comprehensive version of this might let me take the books off my shelves entirely and free up some of that space for something other than books. I am not optimistic. I'm also a little uncertain about the fair use implications of taking a picture of the recipe that was the basis for my recipe, and including it.
