Seattle BirdCam (tm) Diagram

Diagram of the Seattle BirdCam

1
A camcorder is focussed on the birdfeeder.  A 250-Watt halogen lamp is also used to provide balanced lighting.
2
The video signal from the camcorder is sent to a Hauppauge WinTV Model 404 video capture card installed in the computer.
3
Image capture software (WebCam32) grabs images from the video capture card at 5-minute intervals, time-stamps the images, and saves them as JPEG files.  A "thumbnail" version of the image is also created using a small Java application.
4
At 10-minute intervals, the NetLaunch software package dials up to the Seattle BirdCam's ISP and runs a bash script which  invokes a command-line driven FTP client (built with the NetComponents Java library) to upload the most recent JPEG files.
