Rookie sensation Chuck SchillingNOTES
The Pilots finished with by far the worst record in the Century League. They were 11 games worse than Hoodsport, which finished in the basement in the National Century League, and 19 games behind Renton, which finished ninth in the American.

Pilot statistics

What went right?
Tony Oliva finished second in the ACL batting race at .330, a mere 47 points behind Ty Cobb. Frank Robinson was sixth with 37 home runs. Hoyt Wilhelm was second in the league, earning 26 saves. Not bad on a club that only won 58. The August call-up of rookie sensation Chuck Schilling sparked the club for a while, but in the end it wasn't enough.

What went wrong?
Last in scoring, way last in pitching, first in errors with 116. This club did it all. In addition, near constant controversey involving Cherry Popper, Kelly Sweetlow, Samuel Alito, Jerry Lumpe, Bobby Richardson, Pete Rose, Jerry Falwell, and other characters caused almost as much distraction as the revolving door on the manager's office. If the Century League has proven one thing (other than Walter Johnson is the best pitcher ever) it's that the American League sucked in the 60s.

Ralph Houk managed the Pilots to a 12-28 record in the first 40 games, and was replaced by Bauer May 20. Bill Rigney managed the club to a 63-91 record in the first Century League season.

Eagle Hardware had the Kingdome demolished and torn down, and built a new store on the site, so that the grave error of the demolition of Sicks Stadium could be undone.
