Angel statistics
What went right?
Rod Carew batted .327 to finish third in the ACL race. Jim Palmer
put up a 15-8 record and a 3.41 ERA. Catfish Hunter was 16-13, and Bert
Blyleven 15-10. PA led the league in stolen bases, nabbing 114. George
Brett, with a strong finish, wound up tenth in batting at .290. Reggie
Jackson was fifth in the league in RBI with 107, just 54 behind the leader!
What went wrong?
The Angels were last in the ACL in homers, hitting just 142. That's not
what Earl Weaver had in mind! Though remember, he managed when we thought
25 in a year was quite a lot. Though they finished third in batting average,
their lack of power meant they finished just fifth in scoring. They were
ninth in ERA at 4.16, but that's not quite as bad as it sounds: only .19
separates the number three club from the number nine in ERA. Still, after
the big three of Palmer, Hunter, and Blyleven, the rest of the rotation
was a mess.
