NOTES
The Senators won their last three games to get to .500 and a
tie for fourth place.
What went right?
Stan Musial won the MVP award in the NCL with a .329 average,
39 homers, and 111 RBI. He led the NCL in runs, doubles, and hits. Ralph
Kiner led the league in homers, swatting 50, and Johnny Mize chipped in
with 45, giving the Senators a potent mid-lineup. They were tied for third
in ERA. Seems like they could have bested .500, but that's exactly where
they've ended up both seasons. Bucky Walters went 17-12 and logged a 3.91
ERA.
What went wrong?
Olympia needs a leadoff man to get on for the bashers. Most often they
had Pee Wee Reese and Eddie Stanky in the 1-2 slots. Reese batted just
.230 and had an on-base percentage of .311. Stanky hit a meager .215,
though The Brat, known for his eye, drew 83 walks to push his OBP up to
.345. Walters was the only pitcher on the staff to work more than 164
innings.
Billy Southworth takes over the helm of the Senators from Leo Durocher,
who left Olympia to take over for Fred Haney, who was sacked at Everett.
