Lake Quinault Salmon
75-87, seventh in the NCL
April: 10-11. May: 19-10. June: 9-18. July: 13-12.
August: 11-17. September: 12-15. October: 1-4.
First season: 80-74, second.
NOTES
The Salmon played well in May to be in contention as summer hit,
but poor records in June and August, especially, ruined their season.
Salmon statistics
What went right?
Gary Carter is one of the best catchers in the loop. Carter hit
34 homers and drove in 103 runs while batting .285. Ryne Sandberg hit
37 taters and batted .251. Tim Raines was second in the NCL with 42 stolen
bases. John Tudor finished sixth in ERA at 3.64.
What went wrong?
The Salmon are punchless. They were last in the NCL in runs, homers, on-base,
slugging and average. Raines, with his 42 steals and seven triples (tied
for seventh in the league) was the only LQ player to crack the offensive
leader boards. Lasorda struggled to find adequate playing time for Tony
Gwynn and Pedro Guerrero. Orel Hershiser: 6-17. Ouch!
Lasorda won the manager's office in one of the closest races; he won 825 games during the 1980s to 822 for Whitey Herzog.
Lasorda made an attempt to be named manager of the Seaview Artisans because of the outstanding restaurants on the Long Beach Peninsula. Since the Artisans are the American Century League team for the 1920s, Lasorda was turned down. |
