Kent Royals
73-89, eighth in the NCL
April: 6-15. May: 5-24. June: 15-12. July: 13-12.
August: 15-13. September: 15-12. October: 4-1.
First season: 79-75, third.
NOTES
Kent finished 4-1 in October, its fifth straight winning month. A bad
April followed by a disastrous May did in their season. Oddly, it was
the opposite of the last season, when they got off to a great start and
stunk the rest of the way.
Royal statistics
What went right?
A handful of Cy Young ballots included the name of Pete Alexander,
who led the NCL with 270 strikeouts. The Kent ace was just 15-16 with
a 3.86 ERA. Zack Wheat had a fine year, batting .303 with 30 homers and
115 RBI. Gavvy Cravath cracked 32 dingers.
What went wrong?
April and May. From June until the end of the season the Royals looked
every bit the club that stayed in the pennant race most of the way in
the first season. Finishing May 11-39 this season, they never had a chance.
They were only eighth in the league in runs.
