Titan statistics

What went right?
Warren Spahn tied for the league lead with 22 wins, and Willie Mays received some MVP consideration for batting .299 with 43 home runs. Duke Snider went deep 45 times and Eddie Mathews had 42 as the Titans slugged 276 homers, second best in the league. Bob Friend joined the rotation in June at went 11-1 in 20 starts with a club-best 3.90 ERA. What if he'd been there all season?

What went wrong?
Despite the homers, a weak on-base percentage doomed the Titans to finish just sixth in the league in scoring. They compiled an eighth-best team ERA of 4.81, yet still finished tied for fourth, right at .500. Robin Roberts tailed off after a strong start and finished 13-18, 5.04.

Fred Haney, who managed the Titans in their first season, actually was third among National League managers with 504 wins during the 50s. Durocher was second with 523 and Walter Alston was first with 526. When Haney was sacked Alston opted to keep the job with Wenatchee, so Durocher signed with Everett.
