O'STUDIOS' OPEN PRESS SERVICES

History of Open Presses

Open Studios and Hospitality Open Press helps organize working printmaking studio visits. It benefits the community when artists have been willing, sometimes, to open the doors of their studios to other artists and curious visitors. This is true of printmaking artists, who even allow others to use their printing presses. The Open Press movement is alive in almost every major city and is found in small towns and villages, too. Bill Ritchie learned how to do it in college and, later, on his first trip around the world. (See The Travel Tapes).

Once there was Triangle Studios in Seattle, an artists' co-op studio that welcomed many travelers in Open Studios. Also, periodic open house is held at Sunny Arms Artist's Cooperative (living space and studio of Karen Guzak and others) and Artists' Studio Tours benefit for the Seattle Art Museum. For awhile, Daniel Smith, Inc., a manufacturer and supplier of printmaking supplies, held an open press one night each week.

Artists world wide are opening their studios to guests via the World Wide Web. See Richard Minsky in New York and Open Studio.
