Car Wars Internet Newsletter
Vol. 11, No. 2

THE GUNNERY CHAIR

Greetings autoduelists. While updating SWAT HQ and completing this issue, I changed the volume and number designations of the issues released over the past 12 months. The two issues considered as Volume 10 are now on the CWIN Archive. These changes mean the last issue is being considered as Vol. 11, No. 1 and this issue is Vol. 11, No 2.

Once again, I am having lofty goals, but I am going to attempt a March 1st release for Vol. 11, No. 3. Future issues in 2008 will be sent on the first of each month depending if there is enough material to fill each issue.

If you want to send me submissions, please submit them before the 30th to have them included in the next issue.

Royal Automobile and Autoduelling Club (RAAC)
http://www.greatscourge.co.uk

I have mentioned Nicholas Lovell's alternate future history of the United Kingdom previously. I did not have an opportunity until this month to look at the Web site closely. It is packed with vehicle designs, interviews, news articles and an imaginative view of how the British highway system became more dangerous. I highly recommend you spend an hour or two reading and downloading the materials on the RAAC Web site.

Twisted Metal Head-On: Extra Twisted Edition

Originally designed for the PSP, this game was released for the PS2 recently. I picked up a copy today. It has a large amount of bonus content including a password to download the Twisted Metal Symphony Soundtrack.

Play-by-Internet Car Wars in 2008

Members of DRIVE, NADA and other autoduelists have been hard at work sponsoring many PBI Car Wars games using VASSAL and PBEM formats this year. Visit the Steve Jackson Games Car Wars Forum and the NADA Yahoo! Message Board for the details.

2058 WADA Car Wars League

I am receving one or two duel reports each week. The points battle is currently among only four WADA chapters: AVADA, DRIVE, NADA and SCRAP. I am considering offering bonus points for chapter versus chapter duels as an incentive to travel for games, so start scheduling events!

Babylon 5 Scripts: Official Site of JMS
http://www.babylon5scripts.com

I almost never talk about a subject that is not related to automotive combat gaming. I want to make an exception this issue.

J. Michael Straczynski, the creator of the science fiction series Babylon 5, has been releasing the scripts of the series over the past several years. This year the 14-volume series will end its print run forever. Only those individuals who purchase all 14 volumes will be able to receive not-for-sale Volume 15.

The books are print-on-demand volumes and are packed with great information any Babylon 5 fan will cherish. Although expensive (my budget has been haywire because of collecting the series), the Scripts are great companions to the Babylon 5 DVDs.

Volume 13 Insert: Volume 14 will be released in March, 2008 and on May 31, 2008, the entire limited edition 14 volume series will no longer be available. You won't be able to purchase any of the volumes after May 31, 2008. The proof of purchase form (to obtain Volume 15) will also be gone.

Subject: DRIVE Duel report for 1-13-08

From: Steve Nibbelink <vulcanstev@hotmail.com>
To: Owen Michael P. (ServNet) SWAT CW <owenmp@serv.net>

The members of DRIVE journeyed to the Grand Rapids Municipal duel arena for their latest battle. Dusty Rhodes was determined to prove that he could in fact drive a car. However after taking serious damage from Gerrit's laser, he lost control of his station wagon and plowed into one of the center walls. Gerrit was credited with the vehicle kill. Christopher came along and finished off poor Dusty with a burst from his linked VMGs.

Gerrit then journeyed down the north tube in an effort to get to Steve who lined up Gerrit in his sights. Steve took out Gerrit's front tires just before Gerrit took him out. Gerrit claimed another vehicle kill.

Christopher drove in from Gerrit's rear and lined him for a shot. Gerrit triggered his laser at the same time. Each took the other out.

Gerrit Nibbelink and Christopher Nibbelink tied for 1st

Steve Nibbelink once again settled for 3rd.

Dusty Rhodes' clone is trying desperately to convince his sponsors that, yes, he can duel. He took 4th.

Catch tonight's replay on DSPN at 8:00 p.m.

Faithfully submitted,

More Juicy Details about PlayStation3 Live Service

http://gigagamez.com/2007/03/08/more-juicy-details-about-playstation3-live-service

. . . Elsewhere at Sony Online Entertainment (SOE), the company is currently in negotiations with Steve Jackson Games to produce a Car Wars-based MMO. You may remember Jackson as the creator of table-top games like Illuminati, Munchkin, and the failed online game Ultracorps. It will be a while before the details of that negotiation will come to light, but Car Wars may not be the only game to come out of a successful barganing session: Jackson has long sought to bring Ultracorps back to life since it's expunging from Microsoft’s MSN network in the late 90's. In fact, Jackson told this reporter, last year, that he was at GDC 2006 specifically to find a new publisher for the game . . .

Update: Friday, 3-9-2007

We've spoken to Steve Jackson about the property negotiations, and he declined to confirm that SOE was the company currently in negotiations for the rights to Car Wars. "One company has been saying for six months, 'we want to talk, we're just distracted right now.'" However, Jackson did comment that SOE certainly seemed a bit distracted, lately. At the moment, his life is taken up by the "Munchkin" brand of card games, he added.

Twisted Metal Coming to PS3
ps3.ign.com/articles/850/850449p1.html

Secret hidden in PS2 remake found.

By Jeff Haynes
IGN
February 7, 2008

A few weeks ago, we did an interview with David Jaffe on Eat, Sleep, Play's latest project, Twisted Metal: Head-On: Extra Twisted Edition. While Jaffe detailed what it was like to bring the title to the PS2 with new features and levels, he made a rather interesting comment in the middle of the piece – he stated that the next project for Eat, Sleep, Play was hidden within the game, and that players "will guarantee know what we're working on next if you're able to master the Twisted Metal Extra Twisted Edition." He even stated that the first person to post the answer to the code on his blog would receive a big box of chocolate from him. Well, it appears that the code has been broken. According to posts on both Gamefaqs and Neogaf, in the midst of the documentary "The Dark Past," on the game disc, numbers flash on the screen. By decoding the numbers with their spot in the alphabet, the words, "Twisted Metal is on PSTHREE" can be deciphered.

According to a piece on Kotaku, Jaffe confirmed this fact at DICE, stating that he was surprised how quickly the code was discovered and cracked. This is because Twisted Metal: Head-On: Extra Twisted Edition had been released on Tuesday to stores, leaving players 48 hours to break the code. When asked as to whether the upcoming version would be distributed via Blu-ray disc or download, Jaffe had no comment.

While Jaffe was reluctant to mention details on the distribution of the content, he did reveal in an interview with Gametap that Eat, Sleep, Play's first PS3 title of a three game contract with Sony is expected to "see the light of day at the end of 2009, maybe a little later or sooner, we'll see how things go." It now seems apparent that Twisted Metal will be the first of that contract, but no other details are currently available as to what the game will cover. We contacted SCEA for word on this upcoming project and received the following statement, "We have not made any announcements." We've also attempted to get more details from David Jaffe on all of this news, but were unable to receive comment as of press time.

No word was available on whether the chocolate will be sent to the first poster on his blog, either.

Here's a simple little game called Yield!  It's a free download from Invisible City Productions.  I thought I first learned of it from SWAT/CWIN, but I couldn't find a link on your pages, so . . . It doesn't have a lot of detail, but it's still driving cars about, and trying to crash the others.
