Martyn Lovell's Best Of The Web
Yet more proof that the web is more meta than meat

<Best of the Web> <Puzzles> <Arts> <About Martyn> <About This Site> <Weblog>

This page contains my personal list of links, collected in the eight or so years that I've been a regular web user. Recently added links are marked New! . This doesn't imply that the site itself is new.

I have not necessarily tried all the products or services linked from this page. I've used all the websites myself, but not always ordered goods. As always, you should make your own judgments about the quality of a vendor who you're choosing to purchase from. Caveat emptor.

I have not filtered this list. Some of the stuff listed here may in your opinion, be inappropriate for your children to read. You are free to enforce your opinions any way you choose. For example, MSN 8 has great parental controls.

Arts

ACT Theatre - downtown Seattle theatre company that I have season tickets to with a group of friends. Tends to modern productions. Excellent in-the-round spaces.
Emerald City Arts - a series of comedians presented by the Seattle Men's Chorus. I went to one of these this year, which was excellent (David Sedaris).
Foolproof - series of comedy shows hosted at the Paramount Theatre. I did about 2/3 of the shows this year, and will probably subscribe next year.
Great Apes - My book club
Intiman Theatre - next to the Opera house, this theatre company performs traditional and alternative works. Tends to do at least on Shakespeare each year, along with other classics. I have season tickets with a group of friends.
My Arts Page - places I've been, things I've seen, reviews
Pacific Northwest Ballet - Seattle's premiere Ballet company, currently relocated to the transitional Mercer Arts Arena. The company does a mixture of very traditional ballet and more modern dance works. I have season tickets with a group of friends.
Paramount Theatre - One of Seattle's best venues for concerts and one-off events. Their Paramount Club programme allows us to get VIP tickets for the best shows at reasonable prices.
Seattle Arts and Lectures - Excellent series of local talks from writers, scholars, academics and other high-brow celebrities
Seattle Opera - Great Seattle Opera company, also currently hosted in the Mercer Arts Arena. Focuses almost exclusively on traditional productions of mainstream opera. Specialises in the Wagner Ring Cycle (which I got to see all in one week late mid last year). I have season tickets.
Seattle Symphony - Seattle-based symphony orchestra hosted in the recently completed Benaroya Hall. I have season tickets.
Village Theatre - Issaquah-based musical theatre company. This is fairly low-budget stuff done in a decent theatre with decent sets. Cast are normally not stars, but often give a great performance. Seems to focus on older (before 1950) musicals, with a smattering of newer works.

Personal (Me)

Advanced Visual Studio Analyzer Instrumentation - my big project in Visual Studio 6.0. This is a TechEd talk I gave
Assertions - Progress and Prospects - Tony Hoare's assertion presentation is excellent, and references one of my development ideas (VsVerifyThrow), which makes me feel smug :)
Eton College - near Windsor, Berks. I spent five superb, stimulating years at Eton thanks to the generosity of their Junior and King's scholarship programmes. (Age 13-18, 1983-88). Their recently redesigned website is pretty informative.
Letter To Car Talk- True story I sent into car talk. Didn't get broadcast, as far as I know.

My April Oasis Odyssey - write up of my 4 concert follow of Oasis from 2000 (didn't write it up in 2001)
My Profile - My online profile on this site
My Weblog - This blog, on gotdotnet, focusses on technical stuff mostly
St Aubyn's - Rottingdean, Brighton. My 3 years at this school came as part of Eton's Junior Scholarship programme. (Age 10-13, 1980-83). I had some enjoyable times there, but due to a combination of factors, never felt completely settled or happy.
Testing OO Software Systems - it's funny to see stuff spread around the world. Tony Hoare's reference to VsVerifyThrow (see above) caused this paper written by a person I've never met to talk about VsVerifyThrow too.
UCL Alumni News from 1991 students - from my what Americans would call my alma mater
Visual Studio Analyzer Basics - my big project in Visual Studio 6.0. This is a TechEd talk I gave
Web Projects and Source Control in VS .NET - Whitepaper that Korby wrote with my help that describes how to make web projects work in a team context
Web Projects and Source Control in VS .NET, Korean- Web Projects and Source Control in VS .NET, in Korean. Great how far things get localised these days

Erleen Anderson - Erleen and I met a couple of years after I moved to Seattle, and she's another book club member
Fiona Reavley - I first met Fiona my second year at University.
Geoff Chappell - Geoff is an incredibly smart guy who focuses on understanding software through disassembly. We first met when we both lived in International Hall, right at the beginning of his MS-DOS Odyssey. Geoff's unique perspective and flawless understanding of technical details always make for fascinating conversation.
Greg Lindhorst - Greg doesn't seem to have a site, but these are his photos from his trip with David, Stefanie and others to Ireland
Herb Sutter - Herb is someone I've recently met as we've both just moved onto the C++ team.
Jane Hill - Not really her personal page, but her BBC online profile. Jane and I were at University together. The BBC is safe in her hands.
Jay Krell - Jay was one of my first two direct reports at Microsoft (both of whom were called Jay, as it turned out), and we worked together for several years on source control. He's now escaped to work for Mike Grier on Windows side-by-side support.

Louise & Rob Willems - I met Louise my first year at University. We've remained friends through many adventures and changes. Sadly, she and Rob live in the Netherlands, so it's mostly phone calls now.
Mark Tilley - My former boss from Arnor (of Protext fame) went on to form TigerTeam
Miles Dennis - Has recently founded Colrosa providing consultancy and software products.
Phil & Marian Ottewell - Phil used to work for me on team development, and he and Marian are in my book club.
Piers & Viv Allison - Piers is a good friend from Eton. He and I both ended up in technology, though by very different routes. He is extremely well traveled (see his site), and we are still Repton champions in our hearts :)
Piggy Online - I only know Piggy through knowing her sister Rhiannon, but the URL of her website was so cute I had to add it here.
Rhiannon & Rudy Agosti's Wedding - I met Rhiannon my second year at University, and managed to rope her into working on the infamous International Hall Times. She and Rudy now live in Boston, so I don't get to see them as often as I'd like.
Steve & Jane Palmer - Steve, Jane and I first met on the online community CIX when he wrote the offline reader Ameol and I was one of his first shareware users before CIX bought it. Later, I recruited him to come work at Microsoft and he's done some great work on IE and internal tools.

Rewind with Bill Radke on KUOW Radio, Seattle - very funny satire show
This American Life - best show on NPR. Marvelous radio
The Most Famous Voicemail ever - one of my all-time favourite This American Life pieces. This is the story of a voicemail message, left for a student at University in New York. It starts at about 40 minutes into the real audio stream. This is really worth listening to.
Wait, Wait, Don't Tell Me! - news quiz, almost as good as the UK version
Wes Kim's greeting from Carl Kasel - one of the best ones I've heard, though not as good as Raymond Chen's which isn't on the public web as far as I know
