This shows the Windlass installation in my MaXum. The Windlass is a Simpson-Lawrence Sprint 500 vertical windlass, which uses a PM 2 wire motor. It has a rope/chain gypsy, and runs  200 feet 1/2" double braid anchor rode and 40 feet 1/4" HT chain. I use an 18 lb Danforth anchor, which works well for the bottom conditions here in Puget Sound.
Due to the high cost of windlass control systems, I built my own, saving alot of money, and ending up with a system custom tailored to my boat.
After 3 years of operation, the original composite gypsy was so worn and degraded it no longer gripped the rode properly.
I replaced it with a bronze gypsy from pyacht.com. It's $154, but worth it for the increased reliability.
