Welcome to JR's Datsun Website
Dedicated to my beloved 1970 Datsun 1600 Roadster
SPL311-27500
In 1972, I drove a friends dad's 1969 1600 Roadster from Seattle to Portland, Or. for a weekend at PIR. I fell in love with that sweet little car along the way. It was all gear noise and wind leaks, and pure heaven to drive. A Roadster has been on my medium-short list ever since.
I saw this car in June, 2001 sitting in a park-and-ride lot with a FOR SALE sign on the windshield. Yeah Baby! I stood on the brakes and square-turned into the lot for a close look. Not too bad....Most of the Roadsters I have seen for sale were flogged to death and pathetically neglected. This one was complete, driveable, and straight. Some bubbling around the rear wheelwells, and an interior in tatters, but sound otherwise. I got the phone# off the sign and called the owner on the cell. He was just finishing up with another prospective buyer. Oh No! I flew over to his house, which was only a few blocks from mine. After the requisite pleasantries, we drove back to the car for a test spin. Driving revealed some hidden flaws. The shocks were non-existent, and there was serious slop in the steering along with ominous clunking from the front end. This was overshadowed by a loud howl from the rear end. The exhaust was loud, with several leaks, and vibrated against the frame. Undetered, I haggled a price of $2150.00. The prior interested party had to go talk to the SO, so I consumated the deal before he could return.
Being project-minded, I steeled myself for the long haul ahead. Below are the links that will take you through my efforts so far on a rolling restoration of the most needy areas of SPL311-27500.
