| These links will
take you through the fabrication of the various components that make up
the Canvas Set. The Windshield has 40 mil Strataglass panels, while the
balance of the Bimini enclosure uses 30 mil Crystal Clear pressed vinyl.
All the canvas pieces that have glass panels are 2 layer where the glass
installs, with the glass sandwiched between them. This is a much cleaner
assembly than stock canvas, which usually has the vinyl stitched to the
inside of a single layer of canvas.
The canvas chosen is Sunbrella Toast #4628. A note on sewing machines. You cannot use a home-type machine for sewing the Sunbrella fabric. They are not powerful enough to sew the thick material, and the thread transport mechanisms cannot handle the heavy V-92 thread properly. The drive systems are not intended for the stress and load imposed by multiple layers of canvas, glass, zippers, and the large needle, and components of the drive systems WILL break. I found a 1927 Singer Model 31-20 industrial sewing machine, complete with motor/clutch system and table . It is very powerful, and can easily sew 9 layers of Sunbrella or 40 mil Strataglass. |
