Toys Made in the U.S.A., made in America, are not as rare as a look on the shelves of a toy store would suggest.

Toys made in the U. S. are still available, no thanks to unpatriotic buying by major hamburger chains. Most U.S. made toys are those NOT made of molded plastic. This may be because of three conditions.
1. A mistaken idea that production is cheaper in the Orient and;
2. The outrageously high cost of tooling and prototyping in the United States. We can manufacture mass produced items as cheaply as anywhere in the world, but the initial costs are generally out of line. This is simple economic reality is especially devastating for the toy industry which relies heavily on inexpensive molded parts, often produced in fairly short runs, and the potential for product failure (market rejection) is very high.
3. Product liability, irrational environmental regulations, illogical labor laws, aggressive ambulance-chasing attorney profession.
Overseas manufacturers are largely insulated from these.

However, some old-line and most new-line US companies have succumbed to the siren of China. Because many buyers rely on the (ex) patriotic name of the supplier, they often get away with such treachery. Sometimes it is extremely hard to find the country of origin on the label. I suspect it is often omitted deliberately (and illegally) to hide the treasonous acts. If you find an old U.S. company using Chinese manufacturers, let the store and the company management know how you feel.
Check the quality. It may be less than you expected.

The following list is a compilation of US made toys and games found in a major chain toy store. The entries are mostly for the specific toy or game, but sometimes the manufacture's name is listed instead on the assumption (or knowledge) that the majority of their product line is US made.

The list was made up in 1999, and since then, several manufactures have turned traitor and gone to China for production. Always check the box.

The Imaginarium Stores finally collapsed under the weight of their own Hubris learned in MBA schools taught by professors who have never met a payroll. The New Jersey management thought that they knew everything, and the stores were managed and operated by dolts.
The brand name is now owned by their arch enemy,
Toys R Us.

          NOTES:

         (1) KNEX is a rod-and-coupler, tinker-toy like, construction
set made by a U.S. COMPANY in Pennsylvania that has been
making plastic parts for industry for years. They know
plastics and have the talent and machinery to manufacture
quality.!! They have priced the KNEX product more like
the they would price other parts. The result is that KNEX
is probably the lowest price construction set on the market.
Even compared to Chinese Junk. My favorite construction set.

         (2) ImagiPlay blocks are internally braced cardboard boxes
of unimaginable strength. (some rated at 200 pounds)
As a product design engineer, I am impressed with the structural
innovations ImagiPlay designers built into the product.
         50% recycled paper content.

         (3) The same look, feel, colors, and smell of the faithful
Crayola that we remember from our childhood.

         (4) Surprisingly, an all-American institution like the
Smithsonian (Yes, the famous US Government chartered museum)
packages and distributes some science kits under their own
name that are made in CHINA or have CHINESE made components.
         Boo-hiss!! Write your Congressman.
There is no excuse for it...... One would expect more
patriotism from them right in our Nation's Capitol. But then,
the government is full of traitors to the American Ideal.
Even in the face of the "patriotism" associated with the
basically unpatriotic NAFTA agreement, the Government Sponsored
Smithsonian Institute goes to CHINA for supplies.!! Why not
         Mexico or Canada???
The Smithsonian crystal growing kit is currently a US made
product. Their Chemistry sets are of Chinese manufacture.
Watch out for more Smithsonian trickery.

         (5) Play Doh is made primarily from wheat flour. In general,
this is an excellent material for play use, but children with
wheat allergies should avoid the product.

If you have any additions to the list, please email me your suggestions. (Email form and address is below)

All imported products are supposed to be clearly marked with the country of origin. A few products get past customs without the marking, and MANY more hide the origin marking with small print in obscure places on the box. US made products are not required to be marked with the country of origin, but it is a foolish company that does not PROMINENTLY identify their products as US made. There are some who continue to miss this important marketing tool, and their products are not listed in this compilation.

Telescopes, microscopes, optics for children. How to select. Frauds to watch out for.
