Scorpion Bee Hybrids:jn09txt1.html

The Hybridizing of Bees is not an easy thing, so it has seldom been
done in KinterSylvanian history. Queens mate during one short season,
with a half dozen or more drones. This results in a number of
families within the Hive population, so that all bees are either
brothers or half brothers of the others.

Genetic manipulation, then, involves the cooperation of several
families within a Hive, over many generations.

Scorpion Bees were developed as the result of such a cooperation,
and occurred during a great Apicultural emergency in the 13400's.
Bee populations had soared, primarily due to medical sciences introduced
by human doctors. The Sister Queens saw the need for wingsraum, but
the human populations were burgeoning as well, and had equal rights with
Bees.

The Queens in their wisdom secretly developed a doomsday Bee whose
sting was lethal to humans, while negotiating for more meadow space.
The conflict came to a head in 13456, with the rise to power of the
Bee Counters, and their ascendancy to the throne through zzzzz'Sois,
who was no more than a breeder figurehead.

The real power was zzzzzz'Tokris, the greatest of all Bee Counters,
and the only Bee ever awarded a sixth honorific 'z.' In the seminal
Bee Counter Text, "On The Normalization of Population Weight,"
zzzzzz'Tokris demonstrated the Equal Population Mass Theorem, that
called for Human and Bee Populations to have equal masses, rather than
equal lands, but that lands should be distributed according to
numerical populations.

Fearing the sincerity of the Bee Counters, humans broke with the
KinterSylvanian Federation, forsaking claims on all lands but
those they inhabited.

zzzzzz'Tokris countered with his famous, "Ounce Of Mercy," speech,
in which he declared the weight of a Bee to be officially One Ounce,
or approximately one two thousandth the weight of a human. This
generously increased the rights of humans, as Bees weigh much less
than a single ounce.

The Bee Counters proved themselves no mere theorists, moving quickly
to establish their theorems in the 'Night of Mercy,' in which Scorpion
Bee Hybrids fell upon the sleeping necks of two thousand humans for
every one spared.

After this downlengthening of the lives of some twenty million humans,
the remaining ten thousand found generous and ample lands in
the North and South Enclaves, and the Bee Counters awarded the remainder
to grateful Bees.

Though moderate Bees eventually toppled zzzzzz'Tokris, and unilaterally
rescinded many of his edicts, the Bee Counters have remained an
influentual part of Apiculture ever since.

Human populations have stayed within the Enclaves, ever since, wary of
mixing with Bees. By treaty they are still entitled to many other lands.
Bees, for our part, respect the memory of the humans' former glory,
and urge those who utilize human lands for wingsraum, to name their
settlements and honey racing teams after those from whom the lands
were taken.

This seems to produce a feeling of gratitude on the part of the humans,
and helps them dance those smiling dances we all like so much to see.
