1. What is 1-888 dial-up service?

A way for customers who travel with their computers to connect to Seanet without paying hotel or calling-card long-distance charges.

Our 1-888 dial-up service is NOT a cost-effective way for customers who live or work outside Seanet's local calling areas to get their primary Internet service. 1-888 access costs 12¢ /minute, which adds up to $7.20/hr. So you probably aren't going to want to use this service to surf the web. We expect that most customers will use this service to send and receive email while traveling, and that's about it.

2. How does it work?

Once your login has been activated for 1-888 service, tell your computer to dial 1.888.8.SEANET or 1.888.873.2638. It works just like any other access number, and you will have full access to all Seanet services and the Internet just as you have from our local calling area. No configuration changes should be needed.

3. How much does it cost?

All of our dial-up and DSL accounts include 10 minutes of 1-888 access per month. After 10 minutes, 1-888 service will cost 12 ¢ per minute. Connect time is measured in minutes and seconds, totalled at the end of the month, and rounded to the nearest minute and billed -- making it the fairest long-distance billing you'll see anywhere!

4. Where does the 1-888 number work?

The 888 access number works from anywhere in the United States and Canada.

5. How do I activate the service?

Access to the 1-888 queue is set on a login-by-login basis. To activate your login, call our Sales or Support people and request 1-888 activation for your login. If you use a business account, your company's contact person (usually your A/P person) will need to request the activation for you. There is no activation fee.

6. Why does it need to be activated?

There are two reasons why 1-888 access needs to be activated:

  • Businesses with multiple logins can control which employees are allowed to use the 1-888 service.
  • Seanet wants to make sure that you understand how the service works so you won't get any surprises.

7. Aren't 1-800 and 1-888 numbers toll-free?

No. That's the power of advertising for you! There's no such thing as free long-distance -- someone always pays! When you dial a 1-800 number (or a 1-888 number), the company that receives the call pays the long-distance bill. So it's sort of like an automatic collect call. In the case of Seanet's 1-888 dial-up queue, Seanet pays per-minute long distance for every call, and the 12 ¢ per minute we charge you covers that cost.

8. Now that Seanet has 1-888 dial-up service, can I sign up my mother in Spokane so she can use Seanet too?

No, because she will be paying $7.20/hour on top of the $22.00/month for her basic account. Dial up accounts only include 10 minutes of 1-888 dial-up usage.

9. What speed are the modems in the 1-888 pool?

10. How do I configure my computer to use the 1-888 service?

No configuration changes are needed (other than changing the phone number). We recommend that you enter the 1.888.8.SEANET (1.888.873.2638) phone number each time you connect -- this will help you avoid using the 1-888 number when you return to Seanet's local calling area.

11. Seanet seems awfully concerned about the cost -- isn't usage the customer's responsibility?

Many people only check their usage once a month or when their bill arrives. 60 hours of 1-888 connect time will result in a $540.00 bill. We don't want to have to explain to anyone that we understand that they didn't know what they were doing, but they have to pay it anyway!
